Agar is used throughout the world to provide a solid surface containing medium for the growth of bacteria and fungi. Microbial growth does not destroy the gel structure because most microorganism are unable to digest agar. Other ingredients are added to the agar to meet the nutritional needs of the micro-bes. Many specific formulations are available, because some microbes prefer certain environmental conditions over others.
Agar is typically used in a final concentration of 1-2% for solidifying culture media. Smaller quantities (0.05%-0.5%) are used in media for motility studies (0.55% w/v) and for growth of anaerobes (0.1%) and microaerophilies.
Agar Bacto is a solidifying agent used in preparing microbiological culture media. Although Agar Bacto has wide quality control parameters than other bacterio -logical agars, solubility, gelation temperature, and solidity are carefully monitored to permit its use. Agar Bacto is suitable for many bacteriological applications
